Flashfic dump (Pokemon, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, a slew of other things)
I've been playing writing meme games on tumblr. This is a massive pile of one-sentence fills and flashfics, organized by fandom, longest fills on top. All are rated G unless otherwise indicated on the ficlet itself.
I've got a few more fills that I'm working on. Not sure if I'm going to add them to this massive post or make them their own new post; we'll see.
Pokémon
Petrology, Brendan/Steven Stone+May (340 words)
Brendan’s exchanged maybe five words with the man at a research conference; Steven Stone was the keynote speaker and Brendan was just an intern. A warm handshake, a breathtaking smile, and then Mr. Stone had breezed past him.
Still, when Brendan’s first journal article is published (he’s listed fourteenth on the author list, but he’s still on the list), he sends a copy to Mr. Stone. I thought you might be interested in this, is all he can work up the courage to write. Sincerely, Brendan Birch.
—
“Brendan, you’ve got a letter,” May sing-songs, dangling the envelope in front of his face. When he sees the name on the return address, Brendan’s face flames.
May drops the letter onto the table in front of him and hops up to sit on the tabletop, grinning as Brendan ducks his head. After a moment, Brendan still hasn’t moved, and her smile fades. Gently, she asks, “Do you want me to read it for you?”
Wordlessly, Brendan picks the letter up and pushes it in her direction. He hears the sound of tearing paper and turns away even more, staring out the window as she reads.
“Dear Mr. Birch,” May says, “Thank you for sending me a copy of your team’s research findings. I read the article, and was particularly intrigued by the implications of your research. The…” A pause. “How do you say that?”
Brendan turns back, taking the letter from her. “Phanerozoic,” he answers quietly, and then reads the rest in silence. May waits, her feet swinging, watching the expressions that play across Brendan’s face—the way his eyes pause and move back to reread a sentence over and over again, as if he isn’t quite sure it’s correct.
“What is it?” she prompts him.
Brendan looks up, as if he’d forgotten she was there. “Steven Stone, he…” He swallows, clears his throat. “He wants to come with us on our next field expedition.”
May’s grin is so wide, Brendan almost thinks she’d just set them up on a date herself.
***********
Leaf/Red
After the mountain, the only place that feels like home is the road.
--
Silver+his Pokémon
Gengar coils around his shoulders, red-eyed smoke; Crobat’s wings cushion his head; Feraligatr is a warm weight against his back; maybe this is what family is like, Silver thinks as his eyes close.
--
Cynthia/Steven
You’re right—this meeting isn’t interesting, but compared to you, very little is, Steven replies silently, tapping the words out on his phone under the table.
--
Silver/Blue (PokéSpe; spoilers)
It’s so hard to breathe behind the mask, but Blue seizes his hand and squeezes until it hurts, and knowing that she’s there beside him drives him to keep struggling just a little more, just a little more, just a little more.
--
Red/Giovanni
“I didn’t cede the Viridian Gym to your childish brat of a best friend,” Giovanni snarls; “it was meant for you.”
--
Chili+Cilan+Cress
Chili unfurls the Grand Opening sign on the roof; Cress ensures that the chairs inside are lined up to near-mathematical precision; and Cilan unfurls the red, green, and blue umbrellas that shade their outside tables, looks up through the thin fabric to the spot of sun hidden behind it, and grins.
--
Ethan/Green
Green grouses and stands him up and kicks him out of his (gym, apartment, sister’s house), but he likes Ethan, he really does—that’s the whole problem.
--
Crasher Wake/Fantina
The pair of them turn heads everywhere they go, but it’s not like they weren’t already used to that before they found each other; together, they stride through the streets—nearly blinded with laughter, hands entwined—without a care for who’s watching.
--
Professor Oak/The S. S. Anne
“When you get there,” Professor Oak tells Green, the static of the phone line unable to cover the fondness in his voice, “make sure you say ‘Bonjour’; French is the only language befitting such a fine lady”—and Green hangs up, irrationally jealous of a ship he’s never seen.
--
Agatha/Professor Oak
“I know what I’m supposed to say,” Agatha snaps, hands clenching into fists, standing on the land Sam’s bought to build his lab upon; “I’m supposed to say, ‘Congratulations,’ and ‘Your happiness is my happiness’…but it’s not.”
--
Red/Green (PG)
Green’s eyes squeeze shut, and silently, he pleads for this to not be a dream—jerkily, almost involuntarily, his hand comes up to clutch at Red’s, his fingers digging into the space between Red’s palm and his own cheek, pulling him in and away with the same motion as Green sags into the kiss.
--
Roark/His father's shovel
As a child, Roark rides on one of Byron’s wide shoulders and his father’s trusty shovel rests lightly on the other; Roark leans over, reaching out to brush some of the shovel’s soil onto his own fingers, trying to capture a smidgen of his father’s greatness.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Sunday Best, Kyoko gen (110 words)
Kyoko spent her childhood in dresses. Gingham and tartan and deep-dyed cotton, knee-length, with ruffles on Sundays for her father’s sermons. Her father would meet her as she jumped down the stairs every morning, a fresh ribbon in her hair, her swirling skirt almost hiding her scraped knees. He’d smile at her when she reached the bottom and place a gentle hand on her head. What a beautiful young lady you are, Kyoko.
Now, she takes long strides in short shorts and combat boots, speaks with her mouth full, and thickens the accent that her father worked so hard to erase. But when she transforms, she’s still daddy’s little girl.
***********
Kyoko/Mami
Lips pulled into a bitter twist, “I told you, you were always too kind”—Kyoko gets up, not bothering to brush the dirt from her skirt, and heads to Mitakihara to protect what Mami has left behind.
--
Sayaka/Homura
Sayaka continues to issue threats, but Homura stares at her in complete confusion until she throws her hands up, frustrated; “I’m trying to give you the Best Friend talk, all right?!” Sayaka shouts, and finally, finally, Homura’s eyes light up with understanding.
--
Mami/Madoka (AU)
“Professor Tomoe, I have a question!” is the phrase Mami hears the most that semester; Madoka comes to all of her office hours, all her exam reviews, stays late after every class, but it’s only nine weeks into the semester that they admit that it might be something more than intellectual curiosity that binds the two of them together.
Revolutionary Girl Utena
Utena/Juri (PG)
Juri feels the tip of Utena’s blade pressing cool and sharp against her bared throat and thinks, if only I’d fallen for you.
Utena/Anthy
Anthy stares at the mattress of the bunk bed above hers, listens to Utena’s carefree breathing, and feels her heart waver.
Ico
Ico/Yorda (Two sentence fill!)
Ico stands on the lonely beach, his lifeboat bumping in the waves beside him, cups his hands to his mouth, and shouts. His voice echoes off the water.
It’s the first time Yorda doesn’t come running—so he runs to find her instead.
--
Queen -> Ico (Spoilers)
She’s crushed the feeling of recognition so many times when she catches sight of these boys with their stubbed horns and wild eyes—but it always hurts.
--
Queen -> Ico (PG, Spoilers; two sentence fill!)
She won’t let a boy with horns sacrifice everything for a glowing girl in white; she’ll stand guard for eternity—kill a thousand children if she must—to make sure the cycle is never repeated. Never again.
Final Fantasy X/X-2
Lulu/Yuna
Lulu watches Anima rip screaming from the earth, turns to see Yuna’s calm, composed face, and thinks a mother’s love can’t compare to the strength of duty, of devotion, of loyalty until the end.
--
Baralai/Yuna
Yuna’s eyes follow his hands, which naturally form the gesture of prayer as he bows, and tells him, “You remind me of home.”
Star Trek XI
Kirk/Spock/Uhura (PG)
Uhura walks into Spock’s room to find Kirk crowding him into the corner, kissing him, and only says, “Took you long enough.”
--
Chekov/Sulu
“I traded Scotty for shore leave on Christmas,” Chekov says, grinning, but his smile fades when he sees Sulu’s expression—“I cancelled mine,” Sulu replies miserably; on Christmas day, when Chekov gives Sulu a copy of The Gift of the Magi, they both laugh.
Other (X-Men: First Class, Princess Tutu, Durarara!!, Spirited Away, Sherlock BBC, Super Junior, Gundam Wing)
Charles/Erik (X-Men: First Class)
The warmth starts in Erik’s shoulders, seeps down his upper arms until finally his pen drops from totally relaxed fingers, and he sighs; I’m coming, I’m coming, he sends back to Charles in their bedroom, and pushes his seat away from the desk.
--
Fakir/Rue/Mytho (Princess Tutu, PG)
“I told you to give up on him, I told you to stay away,” Kraehe says, standing over Fakir’s body, but her voice breaks and her hands are shaking—Fakir lifts his head, eyes narrowed, to spit blood at her feet.
--
Masaomi/Mikado (Durarara!!)
“So I’ll set you up with her,” Masaomi says, slinging an arm around his best friend’s shoulder, and he’s secretly pleased when Mikado stammers out a vehement “No!”
--
Haku/Chihiro (Spirited Away)
Chihiro kneels by the riverbank and skips smooth, polished stones across the water’s glimmering surface.
--
Watson/Irene (Sherlock BBC)
Watson tries not to stare, but, well, he’s only human.
--
Kyuhyun/Zhou Mi (Super Junior-M)
Of all the voices in the airport crowd calling Zhou Mi’s name, only Kyuhyun’s voice makes him turn.
--
Relena/Pink limo (Gundam Wing)
The best part of her day is when she’s stepping inside her pink limousine, sliding across the slick leather seats to sit comfortably in the middle; she always asks Pagan to take the long way to school, and with a smile, he always obliges.
Crossovers
Green/Sherlock (Pokémon/Sherlock BBC)
“I hired you to help me,” Green snaps, chasing after Sherlock as he looks around his gym leader office touching everything; “Did you know that your sister is dating your best friend?” Sherlock replies, disinterestedly glancing at the photo on his desk.
--
Pokémon/ICO crossover (Red/Leaf)
Red has bathed in every stream he’s come across, but he can’t get clean, he feels like he’ll never be clean again; still, it doesn’t matter as he stands trembling before the still body lying on the shrine and sees her color returning, one legendary at a time.
--
Green/Super Junior (yes, all of them) (Two sentence fill!)
The welcome party is insane, and as the youngest member of the group, Green is simultaneously teased and coddled until his head spins, confused, not realizing that this new experience is called acceptance.
*
“The fans are going to hate you, at first,” Henry warns him quietly, “and do everything they can to drag you down”—“Don’t worry,” Green says, his tone bitterly amused, “I’m used to that.”
--
Green/Sayaka (Pokémon/Puella Magi Madoka Magica)
“I won’t give up until I have your badge!” the challenger shouts, standing in silhouette with her back so painfully straight; Green smiles and gives her a lazy two-fingered salute—“I wouldn’t expect anything less.”
I've got a few more fills that I'm working on. Not sure if I'm going to add them to this massive post or make them their own new post; we'll see.
