Summary: I write holiday flashfics as gifts for my friends. This is one of them!

After several days of travel, the castle shuddered to a stop. Howl was gone on one of his many trips; Markl and Heen were deeply asleep, not even twitching when the gentle rocking of the castle ceased.

Sophie looked at Calcifer, who beamed at her. "I found a friend!" he chirped. "I want to stay here a bit."

“A friend?” she echoed.

“Well, kin, really,” Calcifer said. “Another demon! Living in a house, even! I didn’t think I’d ever find someone else like me here.”

Sophie paused a moment to ponder this, feeling curiosity gnaw inside her like the mice that sometimes lived in the castle under Heen’s indolent nose.

"Well, it's not like we're in a particular hurry to get anywhere," she replied agreeably, and set out to explore as she usually did whenever the castle stopped like this.

“Won’t leave without you!” Calcifer yelled after her. Sophie waved a hand in acknowledgement, not bothering to look over her shoulder.

Stepping down from the last stair, she realized she was in a mountain valley. The bright roofs of a town were a short distance away, and soon she found herself walking toward the largest house on the top of the hill, cocking her head as if trying to hear something just a little too far away.

She heard footsteps running closer, and as she lifted her hand to knock on the front door, it was yanked open by a girl with bouncy curls and round green glasses. The sound just out of earshot sharpened to a pleasant hum.

“It’s you!” the girl said. “You’re the reason La Casita is so excited, aren’t you?”

“Well, not me, exactly,” Sophie replied. “Your flame called La Casita, then? Mine is named Calcifer. Are you a witch as well?”

Mirabel frowned. “What? Nobody calls us that, especially not me,” she says. “Our family has gifts, that’s all. You’re not from around here, are you?”

Sophie cocked her head. “Gifts? Ah yes, I’m familiar,” she said. “My ‘gift’ started with hats, myself.”

Mirabel beamed. “If your casita and my Casita are busy talking, it might be a while. Why don’t you come in? We were just about to have breakfast.” She glanced behind her and laughs. “La Casita already laid out an extra place for you.”

“That sounds lovely, thank you,” Sophie said, reaching out a hand. Mirabel grasped it, her hand warm, and pulled Sophie through the doorway into a house full of light.
